The US Marine Corps (USC) has approved fielding of the Extendable Boom Forklift (EBFL-M) fleet modernised by Oshkosh Defense, the company announced on 19 September.
The decision clears the way for Oshkosh to begin delivering EBFL-M vehicles later this month. The company is scheduled to deliver 535 vehicles by late 2017 to both the USMC and US Navy under a contract awarded in 2014.
The updated EBFL-M vehicle is equipped with several new ‘plug-and-play’ features designed to increase loading efficiencies and operator safety during missions downrange. Modernisation upgrades include forklift options to handle 7,000 and 11,000lb payloads with smaller attachments and a relocated hydraulic manifold to more efficiently load and unload aircraft including with the new CH-53K helicopter.
The vehicle also has an armoured upper cab option for greater operator protection and an armoured lower compartment that houses the vehicle systems. The removable upper cab can be replaced in the field with an armoured cab without disconnecting any vehicle systems. Oshkosh is to supply 100 armored vehicle cabs under the current contract.
